Case Study: UTEC Lima

MArch | Sixth Year | Architectural Thesis [Group]

UTEC Lima, Peru designed by Grafton Architects intends to upgrade the academic standard of the existing technological institute in Peru. Taking inspiration from the coastal cliffs, the man-made cliff creates a ‘curved ingot’ which hugs the main highway into Lima. The currently constructed element of the development is the first phase; with the second phase to be created once the first half reaches full educational capacity.

The UTEC building provides an introduction into the idea of the monumental architectural wall. Structurally, the building consists of pre-cast beams of varying thickness and length to create varying spaces and experiences. The monumentality of the cliff-like elevation is broken down through the incorporation of staircases, beams, brise soleil, columns and parapets.
